The Challenge

Failure to maintain consistent rumen pH for high yielding cows may result in metabolic disorders and lower production performance. Starch is fermented by rumen micro-organisms into lactic acid, rumen pH decreases and rumen acidosis may follow. Large improvements in productivity will occur by using feeding strategies that will result in a rumen pH of 5.8 – 6.5.
